What are warts?

A wart is a viral infection seen as a small, painless, rough growth.

Warts are caused by infection with viruses in the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. There are more than 100 types of HPV.

Warts can grow on all parts of your body. They can grow on skin, palms, soles, below nails, on the inside of mouth, genitals and rectal area.

Can warts be passed from one person to another person?

Yes, infact this is the only mode of spread of warts - by direct contact. They can also be transmitted from using towels or other objects that were used by a person who has warts. Warts on the genital area are acquired by sexual intercourse.

Will warts go away on their own?

Warts in children may disappear on their own because of good immunity, although it may take many months or even years for the warts to go away. But the rule is warts tend to spread rather than disappear.

Warts may recur even after complete removal because warts sow seeds which are not visible to the naked eye. So often after complete removal of a wart, patients come back saying that a new one has come up. The idea is early diagnosis, prompt removal and watch for recurrence.

What is role of wart removal creams and other over-the-counter preparations for wart removal?

The problem with warts is that because it has a tendency to spread, it has to be nipped in the bud the moment it is diagnosed. The over the counter creams or acid applications only burn the surface of the wart causing burns and leave marks without actually eliminating the root cause. Hence they are not recommended.

How to prevent it from acquiring?

The only way to prevent it from acquiring is to avoid contact with those who have it.
